Cairo
2009

Where is the interface between the uncultivated and the cultivated around the metropolis of Cairo and what does this look like? Is there a struggle or a symbiosis?

Accompanied by a guide and with preliminary research via google-earth, I went to look for these exact spots of contact, which are being formed all around Cairo through the expansion of agriculture land or building sites into the desert.

Structure and construction of the metropolis can be clearly felt on this edge. Where people bring water, they can cultivate the desert. Without this water, the desert takes over again and it becomes tangible that there is a constant movement between nature and cultivation.
